Individuals Seeking Certification

"The USCCB does not certify individual lay ecclesial ministers."
Lay Ecclesial Ministers who have proven that they have the competencies required by specialized certification standards are granted a professional certification by their arch/diocese or national organization.
The USCCB does not certify individual Lay Ecclesial Ministers.

The USCCB Subcommittee on Certification for Lay Ecclesial Ministry and Service does, however, approve certification standards and procedures voluntarily submitted by Arch/Diocese and National Organizations to certify individuals.

  • Arch/Dioceses or National Organizations, whose standards and/or procedures have been approved by the Subcommittee, do certify individual Lay Ecclesial Ministers for the approved roles.

  • For a complete list of Arch/Diocesan Offices, National Organizations of Ecclesial Ministers with approved certification standards and procedures- please visit the USCCB Certification for Ecclesial Ministry and Service Directory.

  • If an Arch/Diocese or National Organization is interested in seeking USCCB approval, the office should contact Jessica Granados at rgranados@usccb.org or 202-541-3154.
* Please note, however, that the USCCB Subcommittee on Certification for Ecclesial Ministry and Service only approves Arch/Diocesan certification standards and procedures for Arch/Diocesan Offices and National Organizations of specialized ministers listed in The Official Catholic Directory (also called the Kenedy Directory).
