Welcome

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis is pleased to announce the release of the 2009 Catechetical Sunday kit. Catechetical Sunday, which is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in September in parishes across the United States, falls this year on the weekend of September 20, 2009, the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The theme for 2009 is “Catechesis and the Proclamation of the Word.”

This year’s theme builds on last year’s theme, which was “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church.” The materials in the kit focus on a variety of ways that catechesis prepares people to hear, understand, and apply God’s Word in their daily lives. Resources are provided to encourage catechetical leaders, catechists, and those catechized to reflect upon and take to heart their roles in proclaiming God’s Word.

As in past years, a variety of materials have been prepared to assist parishes in celebrating Catechetical Sunday in September as well as throughout the 2009-2010 year. This year, for the first time, the major Catechetical Sunday materials will not be offered as a printed book or CD-ROM but instead will be published online. While the materials have always served as a parish resource, we hope that putting the materials online will enable many more parishioners to go directly to the USCCB Web site to access and download the materials free of charge. As in past years, USCCB Publishing will provide, for sale, printed copies of prayer cards, family commitment cards, posters, and certificates in English and Spanish.

Asking God’s blessing on all catechetical efforts and with every good wish, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,
