Community Economic Development Network of East Tennessee (CEDnet)

The Community Economic Development Network of East Tennessee (CEDnet) is an association of community-based organizations scattered throughout the rural communities, towns and small cities of Southern Appalachia where people are experiencing some of the highest levels of poverty in the country.

CEDnet's Latino Economic Task Force found that Latinos were being forced into high risk stashing of hard-earned dollars. The Task Force approached banks throughout the region to deal with several of the banking issues facing the emerging Latino community. Sun Trust Bank reached an agreement with the Task Force to pilot the "Hispanic Program" which provides Spanish speaking immigrants access to affordable and appropriate financial services. This innovative model has since caught the attention of the Federal Reserve in addition to other national research and policy institutions.

The work of CEDnet's Latino Economic Task Force results in a special presentation by Buz Lacey, Vice President of SunTrust Bank. Two savings bonds are presented to Rev. Danilo Cornejo for two young Morristown boys in his church, sons in the first family to open a bank account under the new Latino-friendly bank program.
