Four Bands Community Fund

The Four Bands Community Fund is located in the remote rural town of Eagle Butte on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. Nationwide more than one-third of Native Americans live in poverty and more than 40 percent live in overcrowded or dilapidated housing. For decades, Native Americans on and off the reservation have been denied access to home and business loans.
The Four Bands Community Loan Fund, in collaboration with the Teton Coalition, pioneered an organizing effort to convince credit counseling and lending institutions to adapt culturally appropriate financial resource and loan packages. This effort has resulted in changes in discriminatory banking practices, gained state funding for Native American development projects, and increased access to credit by Native families.
