Independent Fabrication
Independent Fabrication is an employee-owned cooperative that manufactures high-performance bicycle frames in Sommerville, Massachusetts. Independent Fabrication's employee-owners decided to start their own company after they lost their jobs when another bicycle company they were working for unexpectedly closed its local plant in 1994. With a relatively small staff that handled every aspect of the business the group quickly learned that in an employee-owned operation each person must take an active interest in every aspect of the business.
Independent Fabrication has allowed its employee-owners to continue building a quality product, while receiving fair wages and experiencing good working conditions. As one employee owner notes, "The result is a better work environment for us and a better product for the consumer."
