La Mujer Obrera

La Mujer Obrera, or the Woman Worker, began nearly 20 years ago by working with women garment workers in El Paso, Texas, to raise awareness and develop their leadership. During the first five and a half years of NAFTA, over 15,000 jobs left El Paso.
In 1997, La Mujer Obrera helped to launch El Puente Community Development Corporation which has led to the creation of numerous economic alternatives for displaced workers. The two organizations have created numerous job opportunities through their successful day care center, restaurant, small business incubator, and Mercado Mayapan - a traditional marketplace offering Mexican products and artisan crafts. La Mujer Obrera is transforming their community and rebuilding the lives and families of displaced workers.
