The Brake the Cycle Tour began as a two-month odyssey from San Francisco, CA to Washington, DC in the summer of 2003. A team of core riders cycled the country, stopping in dioceses and parishes to raise awareness about poverty in the United States. They put on their brakes to engage Catholics in the work of that the Catholic Campaign for Human Development to doing break the cycle of poverty in the US.
Dioceses across the country held “solidarity events” in local communities that summer highlighting the concerns and hopes for their low-income communities. Media, mayors, and the masses turned out.
Those who encountered the riders, or participated in a solidarity event, were changed—motivated to get involved and spread the word. And so, the journey has continued.
Last fall, the Diocese of Phoenix held a family fun ride which brought together parishioners, the bishop, CCHD national staff, and funded group members from the low-income community. This summer, riders from Connecticut will cycle the perimeter of that state to draw attention to the ways in which people living in poverty are struggling—often invisibly.
