Get Involved Roles & Responsibilities of Core Riders Participate in Media and Educational Events All riders will be asked to participate in media and educational events as well as logistical coordination along the route. One or more media events will be coordinated in each diocese along the route. Initial arrangements will be made by national and diocesan staff and a communications consultant. Some riders may be asked to assist with final details and perhaps speaking at the event. Riders will also assist with the facilitation of occasional evening educational programs to be carried out with parish and other Catholic constituencies. Learn As Brake the Cycle participants, you will have the opportunity to witness and experience more than just the changes in weather and geography. Along the route, participants will meet people of all ages and ethnicities who are committed to social change. Visits will be arranged with CCHD supported groups and others who are organizing themselves to improve their communities and their lives. From low-income Hispanic women learning to repair computers to Midwestern farmers fighting for better prices to urban youth helping other youth to make healthy life choices...participants will meet and learn from community leaders about issues of social justice and the face of poverty in America today. Represent the Catholic Campaign for Human Development As a promotional and educational event sponsored by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, riders will be expected to support and articulate the mission of CCHD - to address the root causes of poverty in America through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education. Additionally, riders will be provided CCHD educational materials to familiarize themselves with the program. Expect the Unexpected Brake the Cycle is a new and exciting endeavor for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. While every attempt to plan each detail of the trip is being made, their will likely be unexpected variables. The route is being carefully planned with detailed information about mileage, terrain, lodging, food, water and much more. Nonetheless, road conditions change and weather can be unpredictable. As a result of unforeseen road construction a 70 mile day may turn into a 100 mile day. In order to prevent this from happening, volunteer Support and Gear (SAG) vehicles will be help to scout the next day's route and derive alternatives whenever possible. In any case, this journey is sure to challenge you and present you with unexpected situations. This is not a commercial bike tour. This is an educational and promotional event that is guaranteed to be an amazing and challenging experience. Reflect Each day, riders will see and experience many things - a grueling climb up a mountain pass, a friendly stranger in small Kansas town, or an inspiring visit with a community leader. At the end of each day, riders will have the opportunity to reflect on the day's events. Additionally, riders will rotate responsibilities for writing a brief daily diary and reflection about the day. The diary along with pictures from that day will be uploaded to the CCHD website, so that friends, family and supporters can also share in the Brake the Cycle experience. Promote CCHD Once riders roll into Washington, DC at the end of a long and inspiring journey of Brake the Cycle, riders may be done pedaling, but CCHD still needs their support promoting its mission. For national staff and diocesan directors, the fall is full of activities and events in the dioceses that promote CCHD and the annual collection, which is usually taken in November in parishes across the country. We ask that all riders and participants help to promote the annual collection by sharing the understanding of poverty in America and experience gained through Brake the Cycle to encourage other Catholics in communities, schools, and parishes to support the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in its effort to Break the Cycle of Poverty and Build Community throughout America. |
