Hilary Lynn Chester

Hilary Chester is currently a student and part-time adjunct faculty member. She is 32 and a member of St. Thomas Aquinas parish in the Diocese of Dallas.

Why is Hilary participating? I am participating in the bike ride because I want to help attract attention to the problem of poverty in the US. I think that most citizens underestimate the scale of poverty in this country, and there is a sense that people living in poverty are probably having their basic needs met. I think that the kinds of programs the CCHD support are critical, especially with the current state of our economy. I also think that showing people not only the real need but solutions that are working, will motivate more people to become involved in solving our problems of poverty.

On a personal level, I am currently in the last stages of my education and am trying to decide what course I want to take for the next stage of my life. I am exploring a career in social service and social justice, although that is not my educational background. I would really like to take the two weeks that I am able to participate and explore either career options or other ways that I can affect change. I think being surrounded by like-minded people, both professionals and vocational people, as well as the amount of time spent alone on the bike or the periods of reflection each day may serve as a sort of period of personal discernment.
