Kay Martin

As a catholic religious sister Kay's first introduction to the poor was while she was teaching in the Watts area of Los Angeles during the time of the first riot. Later, with her husband, she visited incarcerated youth in the Los Angeles jail system and worked a food line in Santa Monica. Kay also organized and trained a group of church members for a "lay counseling ministry." After her husband's death, she served as chaplain at three hospitals in the trauma center and bone marrow transplant units. The past six years Kay has served as a Commissioned Lay Pastor for the homeless of Phoenix.

Kay teaches a course on "Evangelism for the Poor." She and her husband taught and led canoe trips for the American Red Cross and the Sierra Club. Since his death, she has completed two marathons for the Leukemia & lymphoma Society and is currently trainig for a triathlon for the society. She recently married Lyle Langlois who is also riding in Brake the Cycle.

Kay says she is thrilled to be involved in an athletic activity whose purpose is to raise awareness of poverty.

I am humbled that I have been elected to participate. With my many years of teaching and working with the poor I can think of no better way to combine my athleticism, love of the outdoors and commitment to God's preferred poor than through participation in the Brake the Cycle bike tour.
