Maria Flores

Maria is currently an Office Assistant and lives in the Diocese of Washington, D.C. She is 25 years old. She describes her family as one that is very united. They have a great desire to achieve goals and improve themselves. They also support the dreams and desires of their family members regardless if they still live at home or have a separate single or married life. As a first-generation immigrant family, they hold strong values that they take and hold dearly to every activity they do.

Why is Maria participating? I found out about this activity from the CCHD Education Coordinator, Ms. Mary Wright. When I met Mary Wright at age sixteen in 1994, she became my cycling mentor at the CAM-Teen Challenge Program. She instilled in me the desire to participate in cycling activities. When I found out about the CCHD Brake the Cycle Tour, this activity became a lifetime dream for me. I know that right now, it is the perfect time for me to do it. I like helping and educating people. The goal of the bike tour is to educate about poverty. I believe that my example will help others, teach others and bring forward this important message to people in my community and through the nation. This activity is different than biking with family and friends just for fun.

This type of activity is the ultimate biking test. The difficulties that I have encountered to make this dream come true and the people that have helped me achieve my dream motivate me even more to continue pursuing it and this June 2003 it will become a reality. Biking is my passion! Through biking I have had the opportunity to go to different places, meet many interesting people that I still keep in touch with, and maintain excellent physical and mental conditioning.
