Rob Marco

Rob Marco is a recent Penn State grad from Philadelphia. Rob is 23. He has a loving mother and father, both math teachers, and two cool younger brothers aged 18 & 20, both Penn Staters.

Why is Rob participating?
I was psyched to hear about the CCHD Brake the Cycle tour. I believe that the peace and social justice movement in the Catholic Church has been steadily growing in the past few decades, and has been encouraging Catholics to take a more pro-active approach to their faith. I believe programs that raise awareness about issues like poverty in America are especially important, since living in this 'land of opportunity' is taken for granted by most people. Those who are denied opportunities because of their place in life have little voice in this country, and it is the responsibility of all of us to speak out with the poor in solidarity, to lend our voice with theirs. I admire CCHD's philosophy of enablement versus hand-outs because it reflects a grounded belief in the God-Given dignity of every person, poor or not.

I've always wanted to bike cross-country. I've grown up on a bike and never really stopped riding. It is one thing I can say with assurance that I will probably never stop doing. I've also been looking for an opportunity to share my experiences of living with the poor in inner-city Harrisburg, PA with those who may not have had experience with how the "other half" lives. Vacations are great, but I've always enjoyed activities that allow for the opportunity to serve others; that's where I find my true joy. Teaming up with the CCHD just seemed like it made sense.
