Get Involved Rider Questions and Answers The Brake the Cycle Tour is a two-month journey from San Francisco, CA to Washington, DC. A team of core riders will cycle the country, stopping in dioceses and parishes to raise awareness of poverty in the United States and engage Catholics in the work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development to break the cycle of poverty in the US. Why would CCHD sponsor a cross-country bicycle ride? The Bishop's Committee of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has decided to sponsor Brake the Cycle for three principal reasons:
A small, core group of up to 20 riders will be recruited to take the two-month cross country journey. Individuals interested in riding should have a positive attitude, physical and mental stamina, experience with CCHD or a willingness to learn and promote CCHD. The goal is to recruit a diverse cross section of Catholics including CCHD Diocesan Directors, priests, men and women religious, young adults and other parishioners, and members of CCHD funded projects. Two national staff will lead the core riders. Riders must be 18 or older. Local Solidarity Rides sponsored by the dioceses will be organized for riders who cannot commit to riding the full two months. What are my responsibilities of the core riders? Throughout the ride, all core riders will be expected to participate in media and educational events, to represent the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and to reflect on their experience through contributions to a daily diary. Additionally, riders will at times facilitate route logistics and assist with the preparation of meals, and coordination of educational and media events. Following the ride, CCHD encourages all riders to work with the CCHD Diocesan Director to continue to promote CCHD and the annual collection throughout the fall. When will Brake the Cycle take place? The ride will begin in San Francisco on June 1, 2003, and is scheduled to finish on August 1, 2003 in Washington, DC. The Brake the Cycle Tour will visit 32 dioceses in 13 states. Where will riders sleep and eat? Riders and volunteers will spend some nights in parishes, some camping, and some in motels. Diocesan Directors in states where the riders will pass will be asked to assist in making arrangements for camping and meals at Catholic parishes or perhaps at the site of a CCHD funded group. Additional meals will be prepared by riders and volunteers along the route or purchased at local restaurants. How much will it cost? Riders will provide their own cycling and camping gear and should be prepared to cover a portion of their own food and personal expenses, up to $1500 ($25/day for 60 days). CCHD will cover a portion of the cost of the airfare to arrive at the start and return from the finish of the event. Riders will be responsible for transporting their bicycle to the start and from the finish. CCHD national staff is working to defray the costs incurred to riders to the extent possible. Because riders will give two months of their time to CCHD, we are also committed to working with interested dioceses to sponsor a core rider. |
