Solidarity Rides

Off-Route Parishs

The following announcements were prepared for use in parish bulletins that are in dioceses on the Brake the Cycle route. The dates and contact information should be localized for each parish and/or diocese.
What would cause 20 seemingly normal Catholics to choose to ride their bicycles over 4000 miles across the US in the midst of summer? Why would someone spend June and July riding a bicycle across mountains, desert and plains, sleeping in tents or on cots? These 20 people will be riding all the way from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. in an event sponsored by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development to draw attention to the 1 in 6 kids in this country who are growing up poor, and to share the good news that our church wants to do something to break that cycle of poverty. Can you do something to be part of this work? Check out the website www.brakethecycle.org for more information, or contact your local office.
“As Catholics, we must come together with a common conviction that we can no longer tolerate the moral scandal of poverty in our land.” - A Place at the Table, A Pastoral reflection of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. In this recent teaching document, our Bishops remind us that we all have a role to play to make a difference right here at home. This summer, a group of Catholics will ride bicycles across the country as part of the “Brake the Cycle” of poverty tour, an event sponsored by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. They remind us all that too many children, elderly citizens and families are living in poverty. The church wants to be part of changing this story. We can all take part – we can pray, learn and act for change. For ways that you can be part of that effort, go to the website www.brakethecycle.org.
Did you know… that 1 in 10 senior citizens in the U.S. lives in poverty? Did you know that 1 in 6 children in this country grow up poor? The Catholic Bishops have organized a powerful response to this reality, helping people to help themselves through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. During its 32 year history, CCHD has funded nearly 4,000 projects across the United States all of which focus on helping people find a way out of poverty for a lifetime. This summer, a group of 20 people will ride from San Francisco to Washington, DC, sharing this news with people across the country. But you don’t have to ride 4000 miles to be part of sharing this good news. If you are interested in learning more about what you can do in your own parish, contact the local office.
"It's a feeling of being powerless by yourself; of living from day to day; of being treated without respect. It's working till you hurt and always coming up short." This is what some say aboutliving a life in poverty in this country. It could have come from any one of 33 million Americans who live that experience every day. The Catholic Bishops are very aware of this national reality. They invite us all to become a source of hope for people in need through the church’s work through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Learn more about what the church is doing to help low-income people help themselves by contacting your local office.
We are called by the gospel to follow Jesus in bringing good news to the poor and freeing those who are imprisoned. And yet, here in the US more working families are unable to make ends meet than ever before; for many, poverty is a life sentence. As Catholics, we believe that every person possesses a basic dignity that comes from God, not from any human quality or accomplishment, not from race or gender, age or economic status. Yet for the 33 million Americans who live in poverty, that dignity is stained by the feeling of being treated without respect, not getting the same chances, being left out – in short, feeling that they don’t count. The Catholic Church in the United States is working to uphold the dignity of every person through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Find out more about the exciting “Brake the Cycle” tour that will cross our country this summer by logging on to the website www.brakethecycle.org or calling your local office.
