From Folsom to Jenkenson Lake, June 3

2003-06-03
Day 3, Tuesday
Trip from Folsom to Jenkenson Lake

We had a big sendoff today in Sacramento, CA. Bishop Weigand of the Diocese of Sacramento and Bishop Blair of the Diocese of Stockton were present to offer words of encouragement and bless all those involved in the Brake the Cycle journey. After a half mile solidarity ride with the Bishops, the riders departed by car for the next segment from Folsom to Jenkenson Lake, a trip of about 43 miles. The distances can be deceiving as we started gaining elevation from sea level to 4000'. Most of the riders didn't get into camp until 5 or 6 PM and then had to pitch a tent since we were camping out. A reporter in Placerville saw some of us passing through, and stopped us to ask what the state of poverty logo on our shirts was all about. They took some pictures and thought they'd do a story on it. When we were barely moving up the side of a mountain, straining every muscle, and struggling for every breath, sometimes it helped to reflect that some in this world have it worse than we do, and that it's this injustice that we're calling attention to.
