Tour Journal Eureka, June 9 2003-06-09 Day 9, Monday Austin to Eureka - 69 Miles Well, today started out at the motel early, at 4:30 in the morning. For me, it was nice because instead of camping, I got to get to sleep in a real bed. The only bad thing was that those of us in the motel had to ride back up the steep hill to the campsite - what we rode yesterday to finish our ride - to meet up with the other riders. When we did get to the camp ground and met up with everyone else, I did my normal things to get ready for the day and ready to ride. We also said good-bye to Erin's parents who came by the night before.
I had decided that I would ride sweep with Erin and Jerry today. I didn't know that choice was going to be so much fun. As sweep riders, we started far behind everyone else so we wouldn't catch many people in the beginning of the ride. As we pulled out we had to finish the mountain pass that we had started the day before. It wasn't too bad of climb, and it had a nice view that we could look over the town that we just stayed in. It was cool to see Erin's parents from the mountain as we climbed. We tried to yell and wave to see if they could see us but it seems like they couldn't see us. We finished that pass and went down hill, and then went up another pass. Then came the fun. Erin, Jerry and I, started singing and making up songs to pass the time. It was so much fun. I had never sung that much on a bike or made up so many songs. We were singing all different types of songs; oldies, camp songs, classic songs, new songs, and our own songs. Here is one song that we made up as we were riding to our first rest stop of the day. Instead of "Row, Row, Row your boat" we made up a song with "Ride, Ride, Ride your Bike": There were many more that we made up but it would take to long to go though all of them. We had a great time riding with each other. It was one of my best days of riding so far. When we were riding there were some funny times too. There is a rumble strip on the side of the road to make sure that cars know when they are close to the side of the road. Well, today I was joking around with Erin and Jerry, so I wasn't watching the side as close as I should have. As I was riding I just moved onto that rumble strip, and I couldn't get myself off for 10 seconds. It felt as if I was being shaken really hard. It was funny after I got off, because Erin couldn't stop laughing for about 5 minutes straight. She was still laughing at the end of the day. When we got into town we went to a diner, and I had some grilled cheese because it looked so good. As we were sitting to have lunch it started to pour. It was good that we made it back before the storm came though. After lunch, we cycled down to the hotel though the rain, screaming and having a good time getting wet. As I was pulling into the hotel, there was an underpass, so there was a dry ground where we pulled in. As I was stopping, my bike decided to stop before I me, and I landed on the ground, but everything was ok. I was laughing because there were a couple people out there and it was a funny thing to see. The rest of day, I just relaxed and slept. My over all feeling is that today was a great day and a lot of fun. -- Kevin Graves |
