Lesson 1

Putting a Face on Poverty: Who is Poor in America Today?

Overview

Using the most current data, 36,997,000 Americans live below the poverty line (U.S. Census 2004). That’s one out of every eight Americans struggling to meet their basic needs. The numbers are staggering. But behind the numbers are real people who deserve to live and grow in dignity. In this lesson, participants complete a Poverty Quiz, view a PowerPoint presentation on the nature of poverty in the United States, and reflect on how our faith calls us to help those in need.

Part I: Opening Prayer/Warm-up
Poverty Quiz

In this warm-up, participants begin by reading Matthew 25:31-46 (The Judgment of the Nations) in which Christ calls on us to feed the hungry and welcome the strangers among us. The participants are challenged to reflect on what it means to live in need today.

Part II: Activity — PowerPoint Presentation

In this activity, participants will view a PowerPoint presentation that provides the correct answers to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) Poverty Quiz.

Part III: Reflection

In this final reflection, participants are challenged to confront stereotypes of poverty and reflect on how their Catholic faith calls them to respond to those in need.
