Grants Application Overview

All organizations that are interested in applying for a CCHD Community Organizing grant or an Economic Development implementation grant and who are not receiving that type of grant in the current grant year are required to submit an Eligibility Quiz. The Eligibility Quiz and instructions for completion and submission can be accessed through the Community Organizing and Economic Development Grants criteria pages.

Eligibility Quizzes are accepted on a rolling basis between September 1st and November 1st. Organizations are strongly encouraged to submit their quiz prior to the November 1st deadline. This will allow an eligible organization more time for completion of the online application.

CCHD requires that community organizing initiatives take a three-year break in funding after receiving six years of support in the last nine years. Please contact your Grants Specialist to determine your eligibility for the 2008 grant cycle.

CCHD's Economic Development Program (EDP) maintains a three-year eligibility limit. CCHD will grant a maximum of three years support to an Economic Development Institution (EDI). These years need not be sequential. For more on EDIs, refer to the CCHD Application Help Guide and the EDP Web pages.

Current CCHD funded organizations, which are eligible for another year of funding, will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to access the online application and interim report by Mid-October.

CCHD is committed to supporting groups of low-income individuals as they work to break the cycle of poverty and improve their communities. By helping the poor to participate in the decisions and actions that affect their lives, CCHD empowers them to move beyond poverty.

About CCHD Funding

When the Catholic Bishops of the United States established the Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) in 1970, they mandated the Campaign to fund "such projects as voter registration, community organizations, community-run schools, minority-owned cooperatives and credit unions, capital for industrial development and job training programs, and setting up of rural cooperatives."

Today the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) can point to numerous CCHD-funded organizations which have grown and now extend great influence in their communities.

Positive signs in the contemporary
world are the growing awareness of the solidarity of the poor
among themselves, their efforts to support one another,
and their public demonstrations on the social scene which,
without recourse to violence, present their own needs and rights... By virtue
of their own evangelical duty, the church feels called to take her
stand beside the poor, to discern the justice of their requests, and to
help satisfy them, without losing sight of the good of groups in
the context of the common good (39).
Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, no. 39, 1987

Pope John Paul II
