CCHD's Internship Program
Expanding community development and professional opportunities for Catholics in the United States!
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops.
Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education. | |
CCHD provides a number of stipend-provided summer, semester, and year-long internships for Catholics in the United States to gain experience working with and on behalf of the poor through the National CCHD office or a CCHD diocesan office. |
The CCHD internship placement program combines practical work in carrying out the mandate of CCHD at the local level, opportunities to develop relationships with community leaders, reflection on Catholic social teaching, and opportunities for sharing the experience with other CCHD interns.
The internship is open to Catholics in the United States who have leadership abilities, community service experience, and effective writing/communication skills. An openness to the
CCHD values of solidarity building, participation of the poor, and Catholic social teaching is essential.
Low-income people from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
All majors, undergraduate and graduate, are encouraged to apply. Some particularly relevant areas of study include business, communications, community or organizational development, human services, journalism, law, liberal arts, marketing, peace studies, political science, public service, religious studies/theology, social work, and sociology.
In general, internship funding is for approximately 10-20 hours/week during the school year and 20-40 hours/week during the summer. However, the actual number of hours funded varies by diocese.
Amount varies according to placement (equivalent to $10/hour)
Please Note CCHD does not provide housing or benefits.
Applications received before March 1, 2010, will be given priority. Applications received after March 1 will be considered on an as-needed basis. All applicants will be notified of their status in May. For assistance, please contact coordinator Jill Rauh, at jrauh@usccb.org or 202-541-3297.
For Summer 2010 through Spring 2011, internships are expected to be offered at these CCHD diocesan offices across the country:

Due to the diversity of placements that are available, specific duties for the internships will vary. The intern will work with the placement site to develop a work plan based on the needs of the CCHD office and the skills and interests of the intern. Duties could include, but are not limited to
- promotion of the CCHD Annual Collection
- project monitoring and evaluation of CCHD grants
- letter and article writing
- parish education, training, and outreach projects
- research, analysis, or feasibility studies
- relationship-building with CCHD- funded groups and other community development projects.
Each year, there is one Summer Internship (20 hrs/week) and one Fall internship (15 hrs/week) available at the national office. Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2010, for the Summer and Fall 2010 internships.
The intern will assist the education unit with youth/young adult programs, including support of the internship and youth arts programs. The intern will have the opportunity to assist with other projects in the education, resource development, grants, and communication units as needed and as intern interests dictate. Work projects may entail phone surveys, research, and writing. Open to all U.S. Catholics.
