Poverty by Race

The number and the rate of Hispanics of any race* living in poverty increased significantly in 2007, from 20.6 percent to 21.5 percent. The number of Hispanics in poverty went up to 9.9 million, from 9.2 million in 2006.

The poverty rate for non-Hispanic whites remained 8.2 percent.

African Americans’ poverty rate rose slightly, to 24.5 percent.

The number of Asian Americans living in poverty dropped slightly but was statistically unchanged at 10.2 percent in 2007.
