Poverty by Region

The poverty rate in the Midwest and Northeast in 2007 stayed essentially unchanged from 2005 and 2006, with small decreases in their poverty rate that were not statistically significant. In the West, the poverty rate rose slightly in 2007, after a decreasing in 2006.

Poverty rates in the South, however, increased significantly, from 13.8% in 2006 to 14.2% in 2007.

The South continues to have the highest poverty rate 14.2 percent.

The West rose four-tenths of one percent, to 12.0.

The Midwest and the Northeast each decreased, but by only one-tenth of one percent, to 11.1 and 11.4 percent, respectively.
