Abp. Lipscomb Appeals to Alabama Governor for Man on Death Row

WASHINGTON (June 17, 1999) -- Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb of Mobile has released the text of a letter he sent to Governor Don Siegelman of Alabama concerning a reprieve petition on behalf of Brian Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin was convicted of the 1977 abduction and murder of a 16-year-old girl and is scheduled to be executed June 18.

Earlier, speaking for Pope John Paul II. Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, wrote to the governor asking clemency for Baldwin. Archbishop Montalvo sent similar appeals to the governors of two other states, Texas and Virginia, where executions were pending.
