Pope Accepts Bishop Pevec's Resignation, Appoints Two Auxiliaries in Cleveland
WASHINGTON (April 2, 2001) -- Pope John Paul II appointed two auxiliary bishops for the Diocese of Cleveland, while also accepting the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop A. Edward Pevec.
The new auxiliary bishops are Father Martin J. Amos, pastor of St. Dominic Church, Shaker Heights, appointed Titular Bishop of Meta, and Right Reverend Roger W. Gries, OSB, Abbot of St. Andrew Abbey, Cleveland, who was named Titular Bishop of Presidio.
Bishop Pevec, 75, has been Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland since 1982.
Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, made the announcements.
Martin John Amos was born in Cleveland on December 8, 1941.
He was educated at Benjamin Franklin elementary school, James Ford Rhodes high school, Borromeo Seminary College, Wickliffe, and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. He holds a Master of Science in Education.
Bishop-designate Amos was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland on May 25, 1968.
He held several pastoral assignments after ordination, and later became teacher, assistant principal and finally academic dean of Borromeo Seminary High School.
Bishop-designate Amos was parochial vicar of St. Dominic Church, Shaker Heights, from 1983 to 1985, when he was named Pastor.
Roger W. Gries was born March 26, 1937, in Cleveland. He studied at Benedictine High School, Cleveland, St. John University, Collegeville, Minnesota, St. Joseph's Seminary, Cleveland, and Loyola University, Chicago. He earned a Master of Arts in Education.
Bishop-designate Gries was ordained to the priesthood on May 16, 1963.
Following ordination, he was parochial vicar of St. Veronica Church, Chicago, then teacher and principal at Benedictine High School, Cleveland. He was Prior of St. Andrew Abbey from 1977 to 1981, when he became Abbot.
Bishop Pevec is also a native of Cleveland, where he was born on April 16, 1925. He studied at John Carroll, Western Reserve, and St. Mary's Seminary, and was ordained a priest, April 29, 1950. He was appointed Titular Bishop of Mercia and Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland, April 18, 1982, and ordained July 2, 1982.
