Pittsburgh Diocesan Official Is Named Auxiliary Bishop
WASHINGTON (December 16, 2004)–Pope John Paul II has named Monsignor Paul J. Bradley, General Secretary and Vicar General of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, to serve as Auxiliary Bishop of Pittsburgh.
Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment.
Bishop-elect Bradley was born October 18, 1945, in Glassport, PA. He studied at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and earned a master's in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh.
Ordained a priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh May 1, 1971, he served for the next 12 years as parochial vicar in the parishes of St. Sebastian in North Hills, St. Paul in Butler, and St. Kieran in Lawrenceville.
From 1983 to 1988 he was director of the diocesan Office for Family Life, then Secretary for Human Services (now Secretariat for Social Concerns).
In 1994 Bishop-elect Bradley was appointed pastor of St. Sebastian parish where he remained until January, 2001 when he was named rector of St. Paul Cathedral and pastor of St. Paul parish.
He was named General Secretary and Vicar for the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 2003.
