Bishops To Review 'For Your Marriage' at November Meeting
WASHINGTON (November 5, 2007)–For Your Marriage, the U.S. bishops' public awareness and marriage education campaign, will be discussed at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) 2007 general meeting in Baltimore, November 12-15. The campaign is part of the larger National Pastoral Initiative for Marriage, which the bishops approved in November, 2004.
Bishops will have the opportunity to view public service announcements about marriage and a new website (www.foryourmarriage.org). Both resources have been produced as part of the public awareness campaign. Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, chairman of the USCCB Marriage and Family Life Committee, and Archbishop George H. Niederauer, chairman of the USCCB Communications Committee, will suggest practical ways in which dioceses can participate in local marriage campaigns. Still to come is a pastoral letter on marriage.
Archbishop Kurtz explained the significance of the initiative in countering cultural pressures that threaten traditional marriages and family structure.
"More than ever, in the spirit of Christ's call and through the example of the Holy Family, we must renew our commitment to spouses and families and inspire those around us to do likewise. Our initiative provides couples with the spiritual and practical tools they need to overcome real-life obstacles, live a committed life and, as a family, be an example for others."
The bishops' meeting will be November 12-15, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel. Coverage of the meeting will be open to credentialed media.
