Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Archbishop Pietro Sambi, up to now Apostolic Nuncio to Israel, as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. Archbishop Sambi succeeds Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, who has held the post since 1998.

A recent episode of Comedy Central's South Park that mocked the Blessed Virgin Mary in a "tasteless and ugly fashion" reflects "extreme insensitivity," said Bishop William S. Skylstad, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in a letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International which operates Comedy Central.

Father Alexander K. Sample, chancellor of the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan, has been appointed Bishop of Marquette by Pope Benedict XVI. At the same time Pope Benedict accepted the resignation of Bishop James H. Garland, 74, as Bishop of Marquette.

The head of the U.S. Bishops' Domestic Policy Committee, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn, New York, in solidarity with the Catholic Bishops of California, asked Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California to commute the death sentence of Stanley "Tookie" Williams. Bishop DiMarzio made the appeal in a December 9 letter.
