Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation of Bishop John S. Cummins of Oakland. Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron, who was named Coadjutor Bishop of Oakland last January, will now become Ordinary of the diocese.

The U.S. bishops' Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People is now available in Spanish. Approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in June, 2002, the Charter represents an "unprecedented milestone" for the Catholic Church in the United States, according to Bishop Wilton D. Gregory, of Belleville, Illinois, and USCCB President.
