The permanent diaconate, restored by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), is a vital ministry in the United States and has grown an average of 10 percent annually. In addition to holding full-time jobs in their places of work, permanent deacons assist in the worship life of the local faith community by preaching, baptizing, teaching, witnessing marriages, officiating at funerals, and sometimes serving as a parish life coordinator in the absence of a priest.
