Principles for Educational Reform in the United States
In September 1995, the Administrative Board of the United States Catholic Conference approved the document: Principles for Educational Reform in the United States. This document is intended to provide Catholic bishops with an opportunity to exert leadership in the area of educational reform and thus show clearly that the bishops are interested in the educational well-being of all children whether they attend public, private, or religious schools.
- All persons have the right to a quality education.
- Parental rights and responsibilities are primary in education.
- Students are the central focus of all education.
- Quality teaching is essential to the learning process.
- True quality education must address the moral and spiritual needs of students.
- Government has a responsibility to provide adequate resources for the attainment of quality education for all children, and these policy decisions are best made at the level closest to the actual teaching and learning situation.
