Though geographically large, the Diocese of Juneau is the smallest diocese in the United States in terms of Catholic population. It serves a relative handful of Catholics in small towns tucked among the bays, fjords, islands and glaciers of Alaska’s panhandle. Most parishes and outlying missions in this beautiful but rugged 500-mile expanse are accessible only by plane or ferry, and travel is time-consuming and very expensive. A growing number of trained deacons and lay ecclesial ministers collaborate with the few priests to provide a Catholic presence in all but the smallest villages. Pastoral ministry in Juneau succeeds despite the remoteness of many parishes, poor travel and weather conditions, lack of pastoral personnel, and very tight budgets.
The Diocese of Juneau has:
- 5,334 Catholics (10% of total population)
- 11 parishes (1 without resident priest)
- 6 active priests
