Some 62 percent say candidates have this quality "very much" and another 33 percent say they have it "somewhat." Respondents are a little less likely to say that a commitment to the person of Jesus Christ characterizes candidates "very much," but almost all agree that they possess this quality at least "somewhat."

According to program directors, candidates also come to lay ministry formation with both a relatively high level of commitment to the Catholic Church and a fairly strong sense of personal call. Some 46 percent say they have the former and 39 percent say they have the latter "very much."

  • Compared to those from other types of programs, directors from CPE programs are much more likely to see their candidates as coming to the program with an openness to life-long faith formation and somewhat more likely to see them as willing to serve diverse populations. They are much less likely, however, to see their candidates as beginning the program with a sense of personal call, a commitment to prayer, or a commitment to the Catholic Church.
  • Respondents from independent programs are less likely than those form other types of programs to view their candidates as wanting to serve others or as open to life-long faith formation. They are more likely, however, to perceive their candidates as committed to Jesus Christ and, along with those from diocesan programs, as committed to the Catholic Church.
