During WYD 2005 FLWY will keep an office in Cologne. Our primary pupose will be to support and assist U.S. pilgrims in Cologne during WYD. We will be open August 15-22, 2005 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and can be reached by phone and fax. |

Speaking to an audience at Castel Gandolfo on August 6, 2004, Pope John Paul II spoke on World Youth Day! My Dear Young People! This year we have celebrated the 19th World Youth Day, meditating on the desire expressed by some Greeks who had gone to Jerusalem for the Passover: "We wish to see Jesus" (Jn 12:21). And here we are now, making our way to Cologne where, in August 2005, the 20th World Youth Day is to be celebrated…. |

Some of the material is appropriate for teens, some for young adults but most of it can be used by anyone who wishes to further explore the theme for the national celebration of World Youth Day 2004 as they prepare for the international gathering of World Youth Day 2005. WYD 2005 is a pilgrimage. What does that mean? Isn’t something they did in the Middle Ages? To take on the role of pilgrim is to participate in an age old tradition of traveling to a sacred place out of religious motivation and the desire for spiritual growth. Patron saints of WYD include Albertus Magnus and Edith Stein. Who were these remarkable people of faith who have ties to Cologne? Prepare for your pilgrimage with the those canonized or beatified and learn more about them! |

Some remarks on fundraising, basic fundraising ideas, and links to other great ideas for financing your trip to WYD 2005. We encourage you to include your parish and community on your pilgrimage through their support of you. Community members are often more apt to give if they know what their generosity supports. Starting with the first Sunday in Advent, this weekly journal highlights a quote from the Sunday reading and offers a few reflection questions for the pilgrim. The journal is interspersed with the words of Pope John Paul II to the youth of the world as well as the lives of 12 saints. This special copyrighted insignia for U.S. participants in World Youth Day 2005 was developed by Henkin Schultz Communications Arts in Sioux Falls, SD. Order them in any quantity for your group. The colorful pin-on button will identify you as one of the many pilgrims from the United States. Wear it as a sign of solidarity. It can also be an item to trade with young people from other countries when you meet them in Cologne.
