  • Damn the Defiant! -- Handsomely mounted sea yarn of a British man-of-war whose seasoned captain (Alec Guiness) has his hands full dealing with a sadistic chief officer (Dirk Bogarde), a mutinous crew (led by Anthony Quayle) and Napoleon's fleet. Directed by Lewis Gilbert, the shifting conflict between the honorable captain and his villainous officer gets lost in a busy plot that ultimately proves less interesting than its lavishly detailed picture of life at sea, with some dandy naval battles along the way. Stylized violence, some of it quite brutal, especially that directed at a young lad aboard. (A-I) (br) 1962
