Darby's Rangers -- Standard war picture in which a U.S. Army officer (James Garner) forms an elite combat unit which is trained by British commandos, then spearheads American attacks in North Africa, Sicily and Italy until it's decimated stopping a surprise German offensive in the Anzio campaign. Director William A. Wellman spends more time on the romantic activities of the Rangers (notably Edward Byrnes and Stuart Whitman) than on the battlefield heroics, with disappointing results. Wartime violence and sexual situations. (A-III) (br) 1958
