Dark Command -- After losing both the job of sheriff and his girl (Claire Trevor) to a Texas hayseed (John Wayne), an embittered Kansas school teacher (Walter Pidgeon) heads a band of pro-slavery raiders as the Civil War nears. Director Raoul Walsh stages some sweeping action scenes and the supporting players (Roy Rogers, Gabby Hayes, Marjorie Main and Porter Hall) add flavor to a contrived but fanciful script. Stylized violence. (A-I) (br) 1940
