  • Hans Christian Andersen -- Pleasant family musical based on the life of the Danish author (1805-75) whose fairy tales are among the favorites of children's literature. Directed by Charles Vidor, the biography is pure Hollywood hokum but Danny Kaye is particularly good as the gentle storyteller and Frank Loesser's delightful musical numbers, including "Thumbelina," "The Ugly Duckling" and "The King Is in the Alltogether," are simple, singable and just plain fun. Best for young children, though their elders will find sufficient charm in the proceedings to offset the sentimentality. (A-I) (nr) ( 1952 )
