King and I, The
-- Imaginative screen adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical tells the story of a 19th-century British governess (Deborah Kerr) who comes to Thailand as tutor to the large brood of children in the royal court but finds her biggest job is enlightening its obstreperous King (Yul Brynner). Director Walter Lang creates a lovely fantasy version of an Asian kingdom, Kerr nicely abets Brynner's Oscar-winning performance and the songs, especially the sweeping "Shall We Dance," are delightful. Fine family fare with some solid moral values. (A-I) (nr)
