Mommie Dearest
-- Faye Dunaway plays Joan Crawford in this unpleasant screen version of the harsh biography written by her adopted daughter, Christina. Director Frank Perry alternates heavy doses of sensation and sentimentality without really getting at anything that might make its subject credible. Only occasionally does the episodic and overlong movie rise above the level of verge-of-hysteria soap opera. Some brief but graphic violence, rough language and vulgarity. (A-III) (PG)
