  • Price Above Rubies, A -- Uneven tale in which the wife (Renee Zellweger) of a Torah scholar becomes discontented with her life in an Hasidic community in Brooklyn, then is seduced by her brother-in-law and his offer of a job in his Manhattan jewelry store where she embarks upon a new life. Writer-director Boaz Yakin treats the woman's conflicts with Orthodox Jewish traditions seriously but the story of her painful path to liberation is overly contrived and often taxes credibility. Explicit sexual situations, fleeting nudity and instances of profanity and rough language. (A-IV) (R) -- (Miramax, rental) ( 1998 )
