Pope Names Miami Auxiliary Noonan Bishop of Orlando

WASHINGTON (October 23, 2010) — Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop John Noonan, an auxiliary bishop of Miami, bishop of Orlando, Florida.

Bishop Noonan, 59, succeeds Archbishop Thomas Wenski, who served as bishop of Orlando until his appointment as archbishop of Miami on April 20.

The appointment was publicized in Washington, October 23, by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Bishop Noonan was born February 26, 1951 in Limerick, Ireland. He received a Bachelor’s in philosophy from St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami in 1979 and a Master’s of divinity from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida in 1983.

He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Miami on September 23, 1983. He received a Master’s in education from Boston College in 1996. He was appointed an auxiliary bishop of Miami and titular bishop of Bonusta on June 21, 2005, and ordained on August 24 of that year.

Bishop Noonan is a member of the Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Committee on the American College of Louvain.
The Diocese of Orlando, erected in 1968, comprises 9,611 square miles. It has a total population of 4,074,074 people, of whom 413,643, or 10 percent, are Catholic.
