WASHINGTON—Pope Benedict XVI has named66-year-old Msgr. Robert Deeley, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Boston, asauxiliary bishop of Boston. Theappointment was publicized in Washington, November 9, by Archbishop Carlo MariaViganò, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

RobertDeeley was born June 18, 1946, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.After studies for the priesthood he wasordained for the Boston Archdiocese July 14, 1973.

Bishop-elect Deeley holds a bachelorof arts degree from The Catholic University of America, a bachelor's degree insacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and alicentiate degree and doctorate in canon law from the Gregorian.

Assignmentsafter ordination included parochial vicar, St. Bartholomew Parish, Needham,Massachusetts, 1973-1978; secretary, Metropolitan Tribunal of Archdiocese ofBoston, 1978-1981; studies in canon law, 1981-1985; associate judicial vicar ofthe Boston archdiocese, 1985-1989; Judicial Vicar of Boston archdiocese,1989-1999; pastor, St. Ann Parish, Quincy, Massachusetts, 1999-2004; vicarforane (head of deanery), south region of Boston archdiocese, 2002-2004;official of the Vatican Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, 2004-2010;and vicar general of the archdiocese, 2011-present.

Healso has served as archdiocesan chaplain for the Knights of Columbus,1988-1991; spiritual director for the Catholic Lawyers Guild, 1991-1999, andpresident of the Canon Law Society of America, 2000.
