Respect Life Sunday: Intercessions

October 3, 1999
Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)

(Note: The response to these intercessions is "Lord, hear our prayer" or whatever response the community usually uses. Additional intercessions for local and current needs should be added to the following intercessions, which may be freely adapted to particular circumstances.)

For (YOUR U.S. REPRESENTATIVE) and (YOUR U.S. SENATOR),
and all the leaders of our country,
that God may make them strong and effective defenders
of the poor, the unborn and the forgotten;
We pray to the Lord:

That God our Father,
so rich in compassion and patient love,
may give courage to all who are tempted
by a culture of selfishness and death;
We pray to the Lord:

For all mothers,
especially those who are young and alone,
beaten or addicted;
that God might heal their broken hearts
and seal them with his love;
We pray to the Lord:

For families torn by violence, anger and pain,
that God may preserve them in truth
and teach them to sow justice and peace;
We pray to the Lord:

For everyone who has grown old:
That as shadows lengthen and evening comes,
we may cherish them as precious gifts from God;
We pray to the Lord:

That Christ may welcome home to paradise
all who, like himself, have been unjustly condemned to death,
especially all children who have died by abortion;
We pray to the Lord:

For wisdom and a love of the truth,
that we may take seriously our responsibilities as citizens
in defense of the poor, the forgotten and the innocent unborn;
We pray to the Lord:

For all who give their minds, hearts and strength
to saving the lives of those not yet born,
that by the witness of their lives
we might gain the courage
to defend the Gospel of Life;
We pray to the Lord:
