Catholic-Lutheran Clergy Group in Washington, DC Discusses Pastoral Care of the Sick During Monthly Meeting

On Thursday, May 23, 2019, participants in a monthly local dialogue between Catholic and Lutheran clergy met at Capuchin College in Washington, DC as part of their ongoing discussion on themes of mutual interest. The Archdiocese of Washington’s ecumenical officer, Fr. Charlie Cortinovis, has been a part of this group for the past three years.

This month’s meeting focused on discussing together the Catholic ritual for the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, as well as a variety of topics regarding Catholic pastoral ministry to the sick. One point that was discussed focused on dispelling a common misconception that the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, also known as Last Rites, is solely for those facing imminent death.

“It is edifying for me to have this opportunity to grow in friendship with the other participants and to have the opportunity for honest and thoughtful theological discussion,” reflects Fr. Cortinovis.

This meeting follows up on the previous meeting reviewing the Lutheran ritual for pastoral care of the sick. Each meeting is conducted in a spirit of friendship and mutual learning.
