Blocks Together
Some days, as Delores Collins walked to work, she would kick needles into the sewer so kids wouldn't step on them. Her Chicago neighborhood was "a tough area, with lots of drugs and gangs." Then George Goehl from Blocks Together (BT) showed up at her door and invited her to join the CCHD-funded neighborhood group working with residents to improve the community. |

The Campaign recognizes the leadership, energy and diverse skills that young people bring to the anti-poverty work of low-income projects and Catholic parishes. The Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award highlights the gifts of young leaders and their Gospel commitment to the poor.
Brigitte Gynther, 27, coordinator of Interfaith Action (IA) of Southwest Florida, is the recipient of the 2009 Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award for her role in supporting and empowering farmworkers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), as they pursue fair wages, improved working conditions, and an end to modern day slavery in the fields.
