USCCB Presents ‘Priesthood Ordination Class of 2008’
Road to Priesthood as Varied as Priests;
for Some through Trials, Others through Careers,
Others Right from College
WASHINGTON—For some, such as Hai Duc Din, 46, of the Diocese of Davenport, Iowa, who spent a year in a Vietnamese labor camp, the road to the priesthood was marked by soul-searing ordeal.
For others, such as Martin Laird, MD, 40, of the Diocese of Alexandria, Louisiana, and Kevin Bauman, 47, of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana, and former vice-chairman of the Romance Language Department at the University of Notre Dame, priesthood follows another career.

The Bishops' Committee on Vocations presents a program for priests to actively invite men to consider a vocation to the priesthood. This program is entitled Priestly Life and Vocations Summit: Fishers of Men. This project is a presbyteral workshop which utilizes the appreciative inquiry method of asking priests about their most positive experiences in the priesthood.
It is the hope of the Bishops’ Committee on Vocations that this project will bring about a renewal of the priests in the United States and also lead to the regeneration of priesthood itself. This presbyteral workshop is based on interviews with priests. The actual convocation with the priest includes their testimonies of positive priestly experiences, establishing strategies for promoting priestly vocations, and creating a structure within the presbyterate for inviting men to consider the priesthood.
With the premiere of the full-length DVD feature of 'Fishers of Men', the Secretariat for Vocations & Priestly Formation has now made available an overview of the DVD, a general set of discussion questions and a set of discussion questions for priests.

"We Were There..." is a collection of essays by priests who responded to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. From the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, to the fields of Shanksville, PA, to the Pentagon in Arlington, VA; "We Were There..." offers moving accounts of how Catholic priests ministered to people of all faiths on the most terrifying day in American history. On November 24, 2004 the late Pope John Paul II blessed six monstrances for use during the Year of the Eucharist for people to pray for an increase of vocations to ordained ministry and consecrated life. The Bishops’ Committee on Vocations arranged for the monstrance to be sent to various dioceses throughout the United States and Canada, for use in cathedrals, parishes, campus/youth ministry programs, and seminaries/religious houses to facilitate prayer for vocations to ordained ministry and consecrated life. Click here to find information and photos provided by a few of the events from the monstrance's travels throughout North America.
