to free and strengthen man, renewing him inwardly and cast-

ing out that “prince of this world” (John 12:31), who held him

in the bondage of sin (cf. Jn 8:34). For sin brought man to a

lower state, forcing him away from the completeness that is his

to attain.

Both the high calling and the deep misery which men expe-

rience find their final explanation in the light of this Revelation.

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.

Because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
