62 • Part I. The Creed: The Faith Professed
• The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian
faith and life. God alone reveals himself as Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit.
• Jesus revealed God as
Father
in a new sense. God is Father in rela-
tion to his only Son. The Son is divine, as is the Father. The Father
testified to the unique relationship of Jesus to him as his Son at
the baptism in the Jordan and at the Transfiguration: “This is my
beloved Son” (Mt 3:17, 17:5).
• Before the Passion, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit as teacher,
guide, and consoler. The revelation of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost
and in the rest of the New Testament testify to his divinity.
• We do not speak of three gods in the Trinity, but of one God. Father,
Son, and Spirit are not three modes of God, but three distinct Persons
who are the same divine being. They are also in relation to each
other, for all three Persons work together in the works of creation,
Redemption, and sanctification.
• God is almighty. The Church often addresses God as almighty,
believing that nothing is impossible with him. He shows almighty
power by converting us from our sins and by restoring us to grace.
• For some, the presence of evil in the world raises questions.
However, God sheds some light of understanding on the mystery
of evil through the death and Resurrection of his Son. Faith in the
Resurrection gives us hope. Full understanding will come only in
eternal life.
• God alone created the universe freely and without any help. No
creature can create or call into being something or someone “out of
nothing,” as he did.
• God created the world to show forth and share divine glory. We are
called to share in his truth, goodness, and beauty.
• God keeps the world in existence by the power of the Son and by the
Holy Spirit as giver of life. Through Divine Providence God guides
all creatures with wisdom and love to their final goal.
• Angels are spiritual creatures who glorify God and work for our sal-
vation. The Church venerates angels who help her on the pilgrimage
to God and protect every human being.
• Some angels turned against God and were driven from his presence.
Led by Satan and followers, called devils, they tempt us to evil.
