Catholic Current – Pope Leo XIV's first speech
Cardinal Robert F. Prevost, the 69-year-old Chicago-born prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops under Pope Francis, was elected the 267th pope May 8 and took the name Pope Leo XIV.
He is the first North American to be elected pope.
When he came out onto the balcony to greet the crowds in St. Peter's Square, he spoke of Christ's peace, the call to be missionary disciples and his commitment to continue to build a more synodal church.
