Pope Names Auxiliary Bishops for Chicago
WASHINGTON—Pope Benedict XVI has named two Chicago pastors, Father Alberto Rojas, 46, pastor of Good Shepherd Parish, and Father Andrew Wypych, 56, pastor of St. Francis Borgia Parish, as auxiliary bishops of Chicago.
WASHINGTON—Pope Benedict XVI has named two Chicago pastors, Father Alberto Rojas, 46, pastor of Good Shepherd Parish, and Father Andrew Wypych, 56, pastor of St. Francis Borgia Parish, as auxiliary bishops of Chicago.
The appointments were publicized in Washington, June 13, by Msgr. Jean-François Lantheaume, chargé d’affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature to the United States.
Alberto Rojas was born January 5, 1965 in Mexico. He studied for the priesthood at Seminario Sta. Maria de Guadalupe in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and at the Archdiocese of Chicago’s University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, where he earned a master of divinity degree.
After ordination, Bishop-elect Rojas’ assignments included associate pastor, St. Gregory the Great Parish, 1997-1999; associate pastor, St. Ita Parish, 1999-2002; and pastor of Good Shepherd Parish, Chicago, 2002-to the present. He also served on the faculty of Mundelein Seminary, 2002-2009.
Andrew P. Wypych was born December 5, 1954 in Kazimierza Wielka, Poland. He pursued seminary studies in Krakow, Poland, where he earned a master of theology degree. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Krakow in 1979.
Assignments after ordination included associate pastor, in Kozy, Krakow, 1979-1981; and associate pastor in Jawissowice, Krakow, 1981-1983.
He sought incardination in Chicago in 1983 and was incardinated in 1989. In the archdiocese he served in Five Holy Martyrs Parish and St. Giles Parish in 1983. He was associate pastor, St. Ladislaus Parish, 1985-1986; associate pastor, St. Pancratius Parish, 1986-89; associate pastor, St. Eugene Parish, 1989; parochial administrator, St. Pancratius Parish, 1991-1992; pastor, St. Pancratius Parish, 1992-1999; parochial administrator, Five Holy Martyrs Parish, 1996-1997; pastor, Five Holy Martyrs Parish, 1997-1999; pastor, St. Pancratius Parish, 2000-2002; and pastor, St. Francis Borgia Parish, 2002-present.
