Baltimore, MD, November 1, 2011—The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) will host the first national conference on solidarity with Haiti from June 1 – 3, 2012 at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
“This is a unique opportunity for Catholics from both Haiti and the United States to learn from each other and help each other in practical ways in a true spirit of solidarity,” said Bishop Guy Sansaricq, retired auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn and member of the USCCB Haiti Advisory Group.
There are over 400 U.S. parishes partnered with parishes in Haiti and many other Catholics who are involved in helping Haiti in one way or another. The conference will include Haitian and U.S. Church leaders who are involved in parish partnerships, evangelization, and those working in sustainable development. In addition to expert speakers, the conference will feature workshops on partnership projects in areas like medical missions, catechesis, reconstruction, education and livelihoods projects.
The conference will explore best practices in small-scale development work and share information on earthquake response and rebuilding, especially through PROCHE (the Partnership for Church Reconstruction in Haiti). PROCHE is the reconstruction entity started by the Haitian bishops, with the assistance and support of the USCCB, CRS, and other Catholic aid agencies, to rebuild destroyed Catholic Church structures in Haiti after last year’s earthquake.
“We invite those whose faith has led them to mission work in Haiti to join this learning experience,” said Bishop Richard J. Malone, Bishop of Portland and CRS Board Member. “Haitians are at the forefront of the Church’s reconstruction program in Haiti and we all should hear the Haitian perspective on what is working best for the country.”
